Oh, Darling! Remember when Caleb planned a surprise party?

I am a compulsive list maker, and probably should not openly admit that sometimes I even make lists for my lists. I live for a good research project turned planning session. Fortunately for me, these are very handy traits for a professional event planner.

Color me shocked when Caleb told me he had planned a birthday surprise. What do you mean you planned a birthday surprise? Like you pre-ordered an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen orrrr…?

Each week leading up to my birthday, Caleb would give me a birthday hint. It went a little something like this:

  1. “I talked to your boss, and you’re going to be out of the office June 24-28” - alllright pal, now we’re talking!

  2. “It’s warm where we’re going” - hmm… it’s June in Texas, that narrows it down.

  3. “You’re going to need sunscreen” - vague, should’ve seen that one coming. According to my mother, I was headed to Kansas to house-sit so they could go on vacation without me.

  4. “More to come on Saturday” - can you at least tell me if there will be an ice cream cake?

It was finally Saturday, and we had to make an unexpected trip to east Texas for my great uncle’s funeral. As family got in their respective cars to make the trek home, we agreed to meet at my Aunt Val’s house for dinner. Little did I know, things were about to get turnt

Standing in the kitchen with my parents, and aunts and uncles shoveling queso in my mouth,  the doorbell rang.

“Jordan, get the door and let's see who it is!” Patti would all but yell at the top of her lungs.

Next thing I know, the kitchen is filled with my golfin’ gals, work pals, and the very best out of town friends. 20 something of my favorite humans all in one room on a random Saturday night, like wuttttt? Is that DQ cake being delivered tho?

The jokes on me, they’d all known about this for months. I’d even been texting with some throughout the day while they flew in to town. They got me good.

Ready for the last hint?  “Pack your bags, we’re headed to Cabo on Sunday!” Part 2, coming soon.

Yours Truly,
Jordan
